Christ was baptized by water and the Spirit came upon Him descending like a dove. Thus we follow the same pattern as we are baptized by water and receive the Holy Spirit. Should we truly receive the Spirit, we are no longer ourselves; we are a new creature. Should we yield the Spirit we are made new because we no longer think on our own, act on our own, or make decisions on our own. We are born again separate from our natural birth as Christ noted in the Gospel of John 3:6, no longer living in flesh, but living in Spirit. So then we begin to understand that we are born of God, we also begin to understand that we overcome the world. Let us take a closer look at the word ‘overcome’
Word Wealth: Overcome
o-ver-come
verb (used with object) 1. to get the better of in a struggle or conflict; conquer; defeat: to overcome the enemy.
2. to prevail over (opposition, a debility, temptations, etc.); surmount: to overcome one’s weaknesses.
3. to overpower or overwhelm in body or mind, as does liquor, a drug, exertion, or emotion: I was overcome with
grief.
4. Archaic. to overspread or overrun.
verb (used without object)
5. to gain the victory; win; conquer: a plan to overcome by any means possible.
We are born of God and we prevail, overwhelm, overrun, gain victory, win, and conquer. Through this can we see further meaning behind Romans 8:37, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” So why is it that we become stressed by the world? Why is it that we often let the world get the best of us? It is not because God has not made the promise, it is because we have not understood and maintained the promise that God has made to us. These are the times that we must remind ourselves of who we are, and what God has already placed inside of us. Though each of us may have different roles, a different destiny, different callings, purpose, and paths there are things that are parallel in all the lives of those who are born of God. And this is one of them: victory. Problems, situations, circumstances, temptations, tests, trials, tribulations, bills, infirmities, and whatever obstacle you can think of cannot surmount what is in you. Before we get to what is in you, let us entertain the question, “What is it that we are overcoming?” When we say that we overcome the world, what does that entail?
